FORT WAYNE

In the background can be seen the sally port of the southeast bastion.  This gate was designed to give fort defenders egress from which to counterattack their enemy.  The 22 foot high vertical masonry walls were not constructed until 1863.  Prior to that it was an earthen fort with oak log revetments.
