In the wee hours
of the morning, ravers swirl amid a fog of sound and light in the in
long abandoned Eastown Theater.
One can make out the outlines the stage
of the Eastown Theater from this balcony view. A projection plays across
the decaying curtains above the stage while a lower projection, derived
from a live video camera, focuses on the performing DJ behind the screen.
In the foreground, light sticks illuminate the whirling dancers.
The fabulous
ruins of Detroit have played key role in the rise of "techno
beat " music culture and its communal expression in the form of late night
parties known as "raves".
From these often despised ruins, a new
and powerful international cultural movement was born.
I invite you on a voyage of
discovery of a much maligned culture framed within the elegant ruins of
the once grand Eastown Theater on Detroit's lower east side.
