Modern Relic, Detroit's Greektown District is the last reminder
of bygone days. Still bustling amid the near demise of the
entire downtown area, it offers a glimpse of how early to
mid 20th Century Detroit looked.

Greektown
When
downtown Detroit collapsed in the seventies, an area on its
east side containing a cluster of businesses owned by vigorous
Greek immigrant businesspeople survived.
A closely
knit community of Greek coffee houses, restaurants, bakeries
and grocery stores gave this area a flavor that the increasingly
homogenized metro Detroit society craved.
The
inevitable happened when it suddenly became chic in the 1980's.
Many of the charming establishments were bought out and replaced
by flashy and trendy stores and boutiques.
Still,
a scent of the old Greektown has lingered and it remains the
only consistently vibrant night life and street life area in
downtown Detroit.
