Workmen
prepare the foundation for the Gem Theater
while it is slowly being rolled to its new location across
from the restored orange brick Music Hall Theater
on Madison Avenue.
This picture presents a panorama of preservation,
neglect, and redevelopment. On the left the Renaissance
Center towers in the distance. Between it and the Music Hall,
the clock tower of the 19th Century Wayne County Building
is seen. It has been beautifully restored.
The white building next to the Music Hall,
the Anis Fur Building, has likewise been
restored, while the towering J. L. Hudson Building,
to its right, and the Madison Lenox
Hotel are abandoned and awaiting destruction.
On the extreme right is a corner of the still thriving Albert
Kahn designed Detroit Athletic Club.
