Deutsches Haus in the heart of old German Detroit |
As waves of
immigrants flooded into Detroit to fill jobs in its
industries and in search of better lives, the city
became a patchwork of ethnic enclaves by the
early 20th century. Among the earliest waves
of immigrants were the Germans, many fleeing the
repressions following the failure of the Democratic
revolutions that swept Germany and Europe in 1848.
Today those
communities are scattered and successive generations
have drifted away from both traditions and
neighborhood. Yet the relics of those past
times remain as exposed in the "Before Greektown
there was Germantown" thread.

Featured Site: East Seven Mile &
Van Dyke |
The intersection of East Seven Mile Rd. and Van Dyke
was both a community center and commercial hub in mid-20th century Detroit with
its stores and businesses. Today it bears little resemblance to those
bygone days. Most of the buildings, once separated from the
busy streets only by sidewalks, are gone and replaced by set back businesses with
parking spaces in front in suburban strip mall fashion. But, as the forum
shows over and over, memories often far outlive the structures and places from
which they grew.
