White on green signs started in 1967. Black and whites were still produced into the eighties until they were phased out. There are still two in service that I know of - Rockcastle and Moross and also...
That would be it. Thank you. Just looking for history. Its interesting to me because the frontage is right at the sidewalk. Wondering if it was part of an old farm or originally zoned as commercial,...
Does anyone know what the barn-looking building on Van Dyke across from Kettering used to be?? Its on the corner of Lambert I think.
TIA.
HSC will move to Wayne Bowl on Michigan Ave. for next season.

When did they revert to signing Cherry St. instead of Kaline Dr. by old Tiger Stadium??
Had PLD kept a coat of paint on the old ones, they wouldn't have needed replacement like this. Highland Park, GP and a few other cities that use Union Metal brand poles have managed to preserve...
The part of the pole in the picture is the HARDEST to remove. The contractor usually cuts the entire pole apart in sections because the damn things are so heavy. The footings for these beasts are...

Hand/Man ped signals became more common in the early 1990s. Detroit still had mostly worded 9" peds through the late 90s. 12" signals in the city also started becoming maintstream around 1995. Some...

Tamarack [[sp?) logs were used for old water mains.
Very sad news. My condolences.
Not sure where I got this from but thought I'd share:
Outstanding work MetalDoctor!!! I have an old arc lamp fixture that was converted to incandescent and it hangs in my basement bar. The patent reads 1908. I love stuff like this!!!
My projects...
Sometimes. I pretty much listen to the same stuff, but sometimes the commercial breaks are too long. I’ll listen to WWJ in the morning, 580AM for oldies [[good station), the Ticket for any relevant...
Thanks for sharing Mike. I actually had the privilege of touring the library this past year and got to meet Ms. Kaltz. They are doing some very important preservation with these card indexes. I...
I have neither unfortunately. A good friend of mine has a GIGANTIC green Grand River sign. He is not interested in parting with it though.
Detroit has debossed wooden signs before the metal black/white signs.
They did indeed recycle signs and recover them. I have an Orangelawn Black/White that after I scraped off the flaking overlay, it read Hardyke! :-)
Just for reference, I have all three generations of the most recent signs. The white and black signs are significantly shorter than the newer green signs....

Anything aluminum would have been mast arms. Plastic signals were all hung by span wire on that stretch of Jefferson as far as I can tell. I'll post 2 links, one of an aluminum signal and one of a...
