This is interesting. Am I the only one who assumed Ilitch already owned these lots? I forgot they would be owned by the County, same as the ballpark. Meanwhile Ilitch got the parking revenue. Explains why he was in no hurry to develop them.

It's considered part of the ballpark footprint, same as the parking structures on the north side. Teams don't want to own the stadiums so they're not on the hook for property taxes or tearing them down, same as Joe Louis and Tiger Stadium.Quote:

The sports teams play a special role in the county's economy, so I'd be surprised if the county exec didn't try especially hard to keep them.
