Rouge

The price of industrialization was the death of the Rouge River. The heavily industrialized areas of the Rouge combined with sewage overflows from the rapidly growing metropolis so polluted the river that it became, like its name, red in color and even caught on fire in the late sixties.

Extensive efforts to clean up the Rouge are having positive effects, but the damage will take decades to undo.
