The
vandalized ceramic sculpture by Jerome Ferretti expresses
the horror of its damage. Seen in the background is
the Masonic Temple.

While
the arts in Detroit have flourished amid the ruined state
of the city, this flowering generally has not put money the
pockets of the artists. Detroit's money elite and major
cultural institutions suffer from a satellite mentality which
causes them to look to New York or some other place for the
acquisition of their culture. As a result both the arts and
architecture of their metropolis suffer.
For
culture to thrive in any locality, it requires great artists
and great patrons. Detroit is sadly lacking in the latter
and to this lack of aestheticism can be traced some of the
appalling destruction of a fabulous architectural heritage.
