Never heard of this project, but it looks like it will be a nice addition to the east side.

The location got its name from the waterway’s original title, the Stanton Canal, a nod to the site’s industrial history.
The Curises hope that the 13-acre area will emerge as a cultural centerpiece for the community, with over 80,000 square feet of commercial and creative space, 85 boat slips, and programmed waterfront parks. Library Street Collective, in collaboration with neighborhood stakeholders, will also spearhead Stanton Yards’ programming, which will include exhibitions, public activations, and performances.

Bless this Curis couple and their endless buckets of cash.

Oh wow... it took me a while to figure out the location, but this is right next door to the Lodge Subdivision... the 3 streets between Jefferson and the river where the Manoogian Mansion is at. 2 of the homes facing this canal [on the right side] are the large turreted house we know as "the castle" and the Blanche [White] House. Wow this will be awesome.

Opposite the Lodge subdivision [on the left] is Waterworks Park.

Holy crap!! The area north of Jefferson here is going to house its' own little artists colony of sorts... this is amazing!!! :o

^ Yeah, they're doing all of this. It's kinda crazy. They're like single-handedly changing that whole area. I hope it gets a lot of infill development. It's not far from those new houses.

That's a big project. I hadn't heard about it at all. Thanks for posting.

Anyone know how it's being funded? That can't be cheap.

Yes, it’s not far from the new houses on Fischer. Perhaps “East Village” will really become a thing!

I LOVE the repurposing on the Good Shepard Church. With church attendance down and the expense of maintaining a big church, it was unlikely that another congregation would have taken it over.

It's also only a couple of blocks from the Pewabic Pottery, so you've already got another arts anchor in the immediate vicinity. Certainly hope they have success.

If you're not familiar with the name "Good Shepard Church," it's the former Annunciation Church on Parkview just up from Jefferson. I'm guessing that the "Park" in Parkview refers to Waterworks Park.

^ AGREE!!! Forgot about the proximity of Pewabic Pottery, just 3 streets over. I didn't see this on the radar at all either. What a great neighborhood that will be. For the folks that are doing this, renovating a church for another use is definitely not cheap.

I love those 2 standalone houses on the same block. They took them and put a large porch veranda around the pair... looks really cool!!

I remember McArthur Binion from the halls of WSU circa 1966-1970. He's a good artist and a gentle soul. So happy to see he's returned home.

Too bad the city doesn't have an institution like knighthood to bestow on its exceptional creative artists.

It was a glorious evening for yesterday's Grand Opening of The Shepherd!
And the community turned out!!

Tony Hawk was there in support of the new skatepark that he and McArthur Binion designed. He was skateboarding with the public and was wonderful with his encouragement for young skateboarders.

McArthur Binion was there in support of his Foundation.

The dedication of the Charles Magee Legacy Sculpture Park was filled with dancers and art and music. Quite a nice tribute to Charles!

Saw photographer Linda Solomon too. And numerous friends and acquaintances involved in local cultural initiatives.

I will be back to share this new cultural center with friends!!

To me this "organic" arts center is going to be competition with the Grosse Pointe Park "produced" arts center up Jefferson. Hmmmm... :confused:

Perhaps there will be overlap in some of their offerings, but really I do not get that they are head-to-head competitors.

I think the competition has already been won. The diversity of arts organizations setting up camp here is already impressive and that is without seeing who moves into Stanton. Just wait until the cafes and bars get up and going, you are going to see this turn into a major hub of activity.

Little Village/Stanton Yards [with nearby Pewabic Pottery] seems so organic... everything is being added to what is already there, making reuse of the existing urban fabric... for a nice and very interesting/diverse place to visit.

The arts center in GPP is being built after everything was razed over the years... the Esquire Theatre long ago [which I am sure there was no plan to build an arts center when it was razed], the historic Deck Bar, and other retail and commercial space... gone... in order to build from scratch. Sure this may have more big pocket donors to pay for the ground up development, but it's almost like they're doing it "Ilitch style"... lets get rid of everything before we build something new.

That is if these developers in GPP can get past the Wayne County lawsuit for violating the Fox Creek Drain easement... :eek:

Work on the GPP site is apparently continuing and I've been told that the issue with the County has been resolved. The Deck Bar was indeed a ruin 20 years before this current project was even thought of and was part of the bigger GPP's efforts to demolish blighted buildings on the Alter border. Not sure what is involved in one municipality buying property in another for the purpose of development. It would certainly seem to enhance the value of the adjacent properties in GPP with benefits to Detroit as well.
